Union Park

See that? That's the future of Downtown Las Vegas right there. Oh, yeah, sure, it's just 61 acres of dirt right now (and one half-completed Frank Gehry designed building), but in five years, that's going to be the pulsing heart of Las Vegas' cultural, philanthropic and non-gaming business communities.

Or so we all hope.

Thursday night feels like it was yesterday, but according to my calendar, it was four days ago. Before all that booty-shaking I did at Tao later that night, I stopped by the Arts Factory to check out the new exhibit inspired by Matt O'Brien's book Beneath the Neon. Took some pics, wrote some words. Matt gave a shout-out here. You're welcome, old buddy. Thank you.

Spent the rest of the weekend ... um, not doing much. Went out to eat a few times. Mixed songs for As Yet Unbroken that are now on MySpace Music. Slept. Self-hypnotized myself into sleep. Watched Office Space. Nothing big.

On deadline for 944 this week, still, so ... yeah, hang tight. There are at least three cool events this week not counting the usual First Friday madness or Independence Day, so if I can get these stories done, I can actually leave the house!

Bands. Battling. For supremacy. For glory!

  • Jun. 28th, 2008 at 3:31 PM

Little known fact: That hat makes me a better studio engineer.

It's been a while since I used this space to self-promote anything, so I figure it's safe now to call upon the LiveJournal faithful to support my latest creative endeavor. My (relatively) new band, As Yet Unbroken, is playing its debut gig during Gorilla Productions' Battle of the Bands at Rox Club (5285 Dean Martin Drive) in Las Vegas on Sunday, July 27. What kind of crazy-ass band kicks off its live performance career with a competition? As Yet Unbroken, of course.

More skinny on the band is here: http://www.myspace.com/asyetunbroken. Be our friend, or whatever.

BUT HERE'S THE IMPORTANT THING: We need you to support us at this show on July 27!! As it's a battle of the bands, our success depends on the loud and vocal support of the audience. As well, the show runs from 5 to 11 p.m., but the more tickets we pre-sell, the better time slot we get to pick! So this is where you come in. We've set up a secure, easy PayPal/credit card purchase button on our website for you to buy the $10 tickets from us in advance: http://vegasinsight.net/asyetunbroken/news.html

Not only will you save $2 off the door price, but you'll make us look really good and increase our chances of not only winning the night, but booking future dates with Gorilla Productions. Plus, come on, you know you're dying to see us make asses of ourselves. And what else do you have to do on a Sunday night?

If you're local-like and prefer to hand me cash personally for the tickets, just let me know and next time I see you, I'll be sure to have tickets on me. Actually, I ALWAYS have them with me.

And if you're worried about spending 6 hours at Rox waiting for little ol' us, don't sweat it: We'll make sure we have cell numbers for everyone who says they are coming or buys tickets from us, and when we pick (hopefully) our time slot earlier that day, we'll send out a text to everyone to let them know when we're playing!! Isn't technology wonderful? It sure is!

Thanks in advance for your support and I hope to rock you all on July 27.

Rumor has it some guy that looks an awful lot like me was at Revolution Lounge inside the Mirage last night ...

(By the way, I AM making a fist with my right hand, but that glass is in the way.)

Tonight, it's the CineVegas awards reception at Planet Hollywood and then a PR Plus-sponsored shindig at Vox wine lounge. Tomorrow, it's the CineVegas closing party/VEGAS magazine anniversary bash at Palazzo. And then Sunday, band practice as usual, and too early as usual.

Oh, and we booked our first gig. More info coming very soon. Hang tight.

Give the kids your money, or else

  • Jun. 9th, 2008 at 12:08 PM
All right, kids -- it took a few weeks, but I've successfully spread the funds from my economic stimulus payment to six charities: two international, two national and two local. Just sent off the payments to The Shade Tree and Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, two organizations which you enthusiastically supported in the final voting last month.

The ol' band did some more recording this weekend, but just as I was about to start recording drums, I made a judgment error grabbing a wall covered by corrugated sheet metal, and slashed the hell out of my left hand, so I still have to lay down the drum track. Hopefully my hand will be healed enough by next weekend to do so, but even just  typing  this is kinda hurting. Ow.

So hot, it's cold

  • Jun. 3rd, 2008 at 12:09 PM
At least in this office it is ...

So I rolled out my national charity donations from the ol' "stimulus" payment to Red Cross (for domestic disaster relief) and Covenant House this morning, as per your votes a few weeks back. Thanks for helping spread this money around to those who need it, and by the end of the week, I'll get to the local organizations.

In other news, if you like to look at pictures of bands in the recording studio, then you'll want to click below:

Once again, I take control of the situation and my loyal band mates rebel. There was a brawl and a shoot-out in the end, but that was not captured on digital.

For the kids

  • May. 29th, 2008 at 8:48 AM
Thanks to everyone who participated in the poll I posted last week to help decide which charities would get pieces of my "economic stimulus" check.

I dropped a Franklin each to Save the Children: Cyclone Nargis and MercyCorps: Aid to Chinese earthquake survivors this morning, because those are obviously in the most immediate need. I'll be rolling out payments to the national and local agencies by Friday.

In other news, um, I got nothing. Been spending way too much time comic blogging over at Pop! Goes the Icon. Otherwise, it's been unpacking, unpacking, unpacking.

Oh, um, duh: As Yet Unbroken finally posted songs online. They're rough -- we're working on fancy versions NOW -- but the songs are fairly indicative of what to expect from a band that "isn't terrible." We've been compared to Tool, Dead Kennedys and Danzig. Uh...yeah. Anyway, click on over there and listen to gurgly alt-metal while looking at pictures of guys rapidly approaching middle age clawing onto their youth for dear life. And be our friend.

Dishes are done, man, the conclusion

  • May. 14th, 2008 at 11:42 PM
11:43 p.m. Just got home. The second of two 10-page research papers I needed to complete by tomorrow is done. I am almost dumbfounded, especially considering this was hardcore research and surprisingly, I did not fill either paper with BS, as I am usually won't to do.

If taking these two grad classes this semester have proven anything, it's that even though I could excel in grad school despite all my other commitments, it's one more thing I really don't need to add to my life right now. This was a good learning experience and should I choose to pursue that master's degree in the future, I have these credits down (unless, of course, I decide urban sociology is not that course of study, therefore negating the last five months).

If anyone is for some reason (hell if I know why you'd want to) interested in reading either of these dizzying articles, I'll be happy to share them after final revisions. The pulse-pounding titles:
  • "Locked and Loaded: The military-industrial complex and its influence on U.S. economy and policy decisions post-World War II"
  • "Midtown UNLV: Pipe Dream or Inevitable Outcome? Exploring the feasibility of success for a public-private partnership in the redevelopment of a university district on Maryland Parkway"
Yes, I know, the excitement is overwhelming you already.

In better (I guess) news, As Yet Unbroken finally recorded another batch of songs last night, with slightly improved results. I have yet to clean up the final mixes, but I think we'll finally have songs posted for your enjoyment/ridicule by this weekend. We're planning to start booking shows by July, so stay tuned for me to surely self-promote the hell out of those right here in this space.

No new articles from me this week, sorry to say. I have (allegedly) a big one coming up some time this month, and I was working on one for (I think) July's 944, but due to some issues with the story's subject, I might have to get it pushed back an issue. We'll see. Right now, I'll just be happy to have no deadlines for anything the next few weeks. I want to get this house up to speed, catch a few movies, rock out with the band, and get out of town next weekend.

Back Alley Boys

These are the guys your mother warned you about:

Yes, we have 25 pictures posted and no songs. We did do some recording last week, but the demos aren't quite even MySpace quality. Hang tight, the music is COMING. Really.
