Green Living

  • May. 12th, 2008 at 11:38 PM

That's the view from my house. Awfully green for Las Vegas, isn't it? I thought so. I mean, I've lived here 17 years and it still seems more green than I am used to.

Of course, were it up to me, I'd replace a lot of this with water-smart, desert-appropriate landscaping. No, that doesn't mean less green. Except grass.

Anyway, that's as much of the house as you will see right now. Still working on the interior. It's a slower process than I have ever taken with a place into which I've moved, and that's considering I once (with my in-laws and then-partner) completely remodeled a two-story house inside and out in two weeks (paint, floors, plumbing, fixtures, you name it).

I did learn tonight that a power drill + Pj = bad news. Apparently, I am not qualified to hang curtain rods in an older house. This must be why I get paid to type on a computer and not to build stuff. Sigh.

Hmm... can't determine location based on average topiary conditions... must collect more information.

When we were considering leaving Chicago 4 years ago, VEgas was on the list. We love it there... and for a non drinker/non gambler that's saying a lot. Vegas has so much more to offer. We chose Charleston because there are actually some very good school districts here (although the state is 47th in education), and Vegas does not seem to put a whole lot into the education system, as of yet. I am quite sure we will retire there, though ....man, it really makes you feel old when you seriously talk about retirement.. I am halfway there!

That's funny -- I was just talking about retirement with a friend this weekend. It doesn't make me feel old, per se, but I was contemplating how I could easily "retire" in less than 20 years. That's the first time I really ever thought about it consciously.

I think Nevada is 49th in education, so good choice. ;)

Dude, do you need help with some of this stuff? I'm pretty handy with home repair/renovation. I can certainly paint a room no problem, though we may have to google the drill business to ensure no one ends up in the ER.

Just let me know if you want help.

You don't worry your pretty, knitted head. By the time you get back, this stuff should be done. OK, mostly.

When I start to feel I've had too much of the desert, I will come over just to walk barefoot on your lawn.

OUR GIANT ROACHES FLY! Well, palmetto bugs or whatever, but they're still roaches technically. But seriously... they scale the walls and then spread open their disgusting shells and FLY DOWN AT YOU.

I would not put up with that. I would just move somewhere else, like Antarctica.

Or Vegas. I don't like roaches either way, but I'd much prefer the kind that keep their hairy legs on a surface. I don't have to bother with where it's going to go IF IT FLIES AT ME. I can squish it with a shoe instead of having batting practice with a shoe.
